For this project we were required to create a sculpture out of clay that resembled one of our shoes that we wear on a regular basis. The only rule we really had was that we couldn't construct a flipflop or sandal of any kind. Other than that, the project was pretty open ended. First, instead of having to sketch out or shoe first, Mrs. Smith had us take three different pictures of the shoe we wanted to recreate. Second, we had to actually construct our shoe. I decided to make a recreation of my gray and white checkered vans. Although, the shoe before firing is fairly plain, I decided that I would try and add on the checkers on with underglaze. Lastly, we had to glaze our recreated shoe similarly to how it looked in real life. This is the glaze that I used. Inside: Outside: Originally, I thought this was going to be a boring project; however, I actually had fun creating my shoe and trying to make it as similar as I could to my real shoe. If I had to go back to recreate my shoe I might pick I different shoe or tried to add more detail before bisque firing it.

For this project we were required to create four identical cups that have two different additives and one carving design. First, we were required to sketch several different ideas for our cups. I ended up choosing the cup with a leaf branch looking thing that combined both added leaves and carved leaves. It also has a small circular placard at the bottom on the inside of my cup for my second additive. Second, we had to construct our four identical cups out of clay. They have to be able to hold water and have no cracks. Lastly, we had to glaze our four cups all the same glaze. This is the glaze I used: Inside: Outside: I really liked how these cups turned out. I think if I had to do the project again I would have made coffee much instead with a different design. The design I did was very tedious and I got careless with the placement and attachment of the leaves which decreased the craftsmanship of the cups.
For this project we were required to create an animal out of clay that resembled how it would look made out of origami. We were graded on aspects like, craftsmanship, detail, accuracy, etc. First we were required to create the same origami animal three times at different sizes out of paper. I chose to create and origami angel fish. Second, after creating our three origami animals, we had to construct it out of clay. I originally just constructed the origami angel fish by itself out of clay and then had to find a way to get it to stand up by itself. Lastly, we were required to glaze our animals with underglaze. I used the following glaze. Body: Regal Purple x3 Fins: China White x3 Stand: Jet Black x3 If I had the chance to do this project again I would either pick a different origami animal that could stand by itself or I would have found a different way to get my origami angel fish to stand up. I would have changed this because my stand ended up breaking off of my fish during its final glaze firing.
The purpose of this project was to create a slab box that was a minimum of 5in by 5 in. It also had to have a lid that was removable but creatively attached. It also was required to have two areas of attachments, two areas of carvings, and one area of pattern repetition. First, we were required to sketch out three designs to choose from when we began to create our slab box. Second, we were required to construct the slab box. I choose to construct the triangle looking box that had circle subtractions on two sides and a jelly fish additive on one side. We were supposed to take a picture of our box before we fired/glazed; however, I forgot and don't have a picture of this step. Lastly, we were required to glaze the slab box that we had created. The glaze I used: Outside and Inside : Frosted Melon pc. x3 Jelly Fish: Sky c. x3 If I had to redo this project I would probably pick a different box to do because this one was very difficult to construct. I also ended up with A LOT of cracks in the corners of this box, so in the future I will be more gentle with my clay and make sure it is created carefully.
For this project, we were to create two bowls for our local food pantry. Our criteria was to create two soup-sized bowls with a plaque somewhere on the bowls that say "2019". SketchThe first step in making the bowls for our local food pantry, was sketching out three different bowls that we could create. I ended up choosing the first sketch and the third sketch to create.
Glaze Fire Bowl #1Inside: Hibiscus Matte sh. x3 & Temmoku x1 thick dripping on rim Outside: Hibiscus Matte sh. x3 Glaze Fire Bowl #2Inside: Lavender c. x3, Indigo Float pc. Rim Drip x1
Outside: Lavender c. x3, Snow c. x3 on moon's For this assignment we were required to create a pot out of coils that was at least 7 in tall, 3 to 6 in wide, and had five different coil designs. This is what I decided to create! GlazeLastly, this is how my coil pot turned out after it was glazed fired. This is what I used:
Marigold (c) x3 Ancient Jasper (pc) x1 thick drip on top rim This was our first ceramic assignment we had to do. The cups that we created will actually be used in a fundraiser for our local library. Our library is having a trivia night where they will be selling our cups with hot chocolate in them.
I like how the construction of my cup turned out, it wasn't quite as short and wide as I anticipated it would be, but I still am happy with how it turned out. I think the texture was rolled in a tad too deep and I could have stayed a wee bite more shallow. Lastly, I liked the glaze that I used; however, I wish I would have used more Ancient Jasper in some areas to make it run more.

Debra LaneAll of these ceramic pieces I have created as assignments for my ceramics class. Additional pieces that I have created for fun will be found on a different area of my website. |
